Joyce Arthur perplexed by rejection of abortion-centred controversy-mongeringWriting on the arch-leftist website Straight Goods, Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada director Joyce Arthur just doesn't seem to understand why so many Canadians would object to Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff's attempt to stir up abortion-centred controversy in the face of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's call for a global maternal health care strategy."A bewildering firestorm of media controversy has erupted over Michael Ignatieff's strong and principled statements about women's reproductive rights overseas," Arthur complains. "The Liberal Opposition Leader has been urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper not to exclude abortion and contraception from his surprising plan to become a champion of maternal and...
Although some petulant cry-babies would likely beg to differ, Hunter at Climbing Out of the Dark got the Tim Tebow Superbowl ad unequivocally right. The sheer scope of the whining that preceded the Tim Tebow anti-abortion ad during the Super Bowl would have had a great many people expecting something truly virulent.Instead, what was delivered was an entirely benign and civil ad in which Tebow's mother Pam recounted the challenges she faced during her pregnancy."I can remember so many times when I almost lost him," she said. "It was so hard. You know, with everything our family's been through, you have to be tough."At which point Pam is suddenly tackled to the ground by her son, whom she admonishes."Timmy! I'm trying to tell our story, here."At which point Tebow apologizes and hugs his...
Banning anti-abortion groups violates civil libertiesAcross Canada, anti-abortion groups on various University campuses have been under fire.Where pro-abortion groups fail and students' unions decline to run pro-abortion groups off campus, they settle for simply disrupting any events they disagree with.In the latter case, it's censorship by deeply-institutionalized means.Fortunately, the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association is prepared to take a stand on the matter, they're preparing to intervene in a case involving the University of Victoria Student Society and an anti-abortion group by the name of Youth Protecting Youth. The argument is that anti-abortion activism "inherently discriminates" against women. It shouldn't be thought that the BCCLA necessarily agrees with Youth...
Not very controversial. The pre ad publicity was massive and I think the ad did its job....
iffy wants us to believe taht exporting abortion from Canada is doing something for women's health. Her doesn't really believe that. He wants rabid feminist votes, but they usually vote dipper.Ian Gentles: Lessons on "reproductive health" from EuropePosted: February 05, 2010, 9:30 AM by NP EditorIan GentlesLiberal leader Michael Ignatieff says abortion must be included in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s initiative to mobilize international support for maternal and child health care in the world’s poorest countries. This week, Mr. Ignatieff declared: “Women are entitled to the full gamut of reproductive health services and that includes termination of pregnancy and contraception.” He then added: “We’ve had a pro-choice consensus in this area for a couple of generations and we...
I am not surprised that iffy is pro abortion, but I am disappointed. I thought he could do better than better than pandering to radical feminists. There are pro life grit MPs . I wonder how they tolerate this. Being pro life is not just ideological. It is to protect mothers and especially children. Abortion is a tragedy, why should export this tragedy to other lands. Is this a form of eugenics?Michael Ignatieff warned Stephen Harper today not to play “ideological games” with women’s health, suggesting the Prime Minister’s new commitment should extend to abortion programs.“Let’s keep the ideology out of this and move forward,” said the Liberal leader at an afternoon press conference.Mr. Ignatieff says he supports Mr. Harper’s initiative to make maternal health a key plank...
Readers of the Nexus surely know about Robert Peter John Day's most recent hilarious hypocrisy -- Day has started a "Do Not Comment" list for Blogging Tories. In his own mind, Day must imagine this to be a devestating tactic. But the problem with it is that anyone who has made their rounds around the blogosphere -- conservative and progressive alike -- know that there are plenty of bloggers who can't tolerate any dissenting comments, regardless of how true they may be.For example, consider the interesting case of Dammit Janet!.In a recent post at those hallowed confines, pro-abortion activist deBeauxOs complains about laws recently passed in Oklahoma requiring pregnant women to view an ultrasound before they're considered elligible to receive an abortion. It's only natureal that someone like...
Nothing in life sucks worse than watching someone get away with something they shouldn't.Yet, in the Kansas courtroom where Scott Roeder, the man who assassinated Dr George Tiller, is on trial for murder, that apparently may happen. It's been reported that Justice Warren Wilbert may allow Roeder to face a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, should he decide it's appropriate."There's the very real possibility evidence could come from the defendant alone that would give me a duty to instruct the jury on voluntary manslaughter," Wilbert mused. Some of the usual suspects are infuriated over this, and rightly so. If anything, Roeder should be facing more serious charges -- terrorism-related charges -- than lesser charges. But there are some of the other usual suspects who need to keep their...
Canadians have the right to weigh inConservative MP Rod Bruinooge already knows how he wants to kick off the new year, and the new decade. He has puiblicly stated he wants to re-open the abortion debate in Canada.“I was born in the post-Morgentaler era, and I think I come to this debate under a different context,” says Bruinooge. “I believe that having open debate on important topics like this is essential for any democratic movement. It's a democracy, and we are putting our ideas out for debate.”“I'm under no illusions that this is going to be an easy course,” he continues. “There are some parties that suppress pro-life thinking. There could be consequences for those MPs in other parties. I know there have been some political parties that have chosen to remove their members...
"Pro-choice" movement decries doctor's right to chooseWhile the topic of abortion has proven to be a matter of intense interest for a great many Canadians, the topic of the rhetoric surrounding the debate can prove much more interesting still. The people most emotionally invested in the issue have divided themselves up into opposing camps, calling themselves "pro-choice" (those favouring legalized abortion) and "pro-life" (those who oppose it). Conversely, each lables their opponents as "anti-choice" or "anti-life".Each label is designed to give its camp a rhetorical advantage. The "pro-choice" movement insists that what they are really is in favour of is freedom, and their opponents reject it. The "pro-life" movement insists that what they are really in favour of the preservation of human...
Law and Order discusses abortionA recent episode of Law and Order has apparently provoked quite the controversy amongst the pro-abortion movement. In the episode, Detectives Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) and Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson) are investigating the murder of Dr Walter Benning, an abortion doctor killed while attending his church.Dr Benning is clearly a stand-in for Dr George Tiller, who was murdered earlier this year while attending his own church.Eventually, they identify Wayne Grogan (PJ Sosko) as their suspect. Grogan is defended by Roger Jenkins (Richard Thomas), who also acts as the legal advisor for a Crisis Pregnancy Centre. He defends Grogan with a justification defense. They argue that, as Grogan was -- in his own mind, at least -- acting in defense of a single viable...

I million protesters took to the streets in Spain in opposition to the tragedy of abortion and a new socialist government abortion law. In Canada there is no restriction on abortion. The new Spanish law would allow abortion only up to 14 weeks. The Spanish law written by socialists would be an improvement over the Canadian situation.More than a million people are said to have taken part in a march in Madrid to oppose government plans to liberalise Spain's abortion law.Several dozen centre-right opposition party joined the demonstration, which was backed by Roman Catholic bishops.Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero wants to introduce abortion on demand. At present, a pregnancy can only be terminated in mainly Catholic Spain under specific circumstances. The government...

Antonia Zerbisias offers an odd definition of "intimidation"Toronto Star columnist Antonia Zerbisias has long been a not-so-subetly-kept secret of Canada's loony left (a category of left wingers who should be considered a subcategory of the hateful left, themselves a category of left wingers).Parading her political thought under the guise of mainstream respectability, Zerbisias has, on occasion, let her true nature slip through the facade -- such as when she suggested Dick Cheney should shoot Michelle Malkin in the face and more recently, when she questioned Irwin Cotler's loyalty to Canada on account of his children volunteering for the Israeli Defense Forces. But, as is so often the case with individuals such as Zerbisias, it seems that whatever lunacy or silliness (however the case may...
Sometimes the lack of self-awareness of Canada's extreme left is nothing short of astounding. That lack of self awareness is particularly evident when one examines the pro-abortion movement. And when one is talking about pro-abortionists who lack self-awarness, one of the first to come to mind is none other than JJ, the proprietor of Unrepentant Old HippieIn a recent post at that particular percolating cesspool, JJ makes it evident that her ire has been drawn by Lila Rose, whom JJ describes as an "anti-choice fascist" (which is an ironic accusation coming from someone who applauds violence against her anti-abortion opponents).Rose recently suggested that all abortions be "conducted in the public square"."I don’t see misogyny behind every tree, but for a few seconds there I saw a hatred...
This should BO's lefty friends very happy. It makes me happy.Dems: No taxpayer funds for abortionsDemocrats are signaling Sunday that language will be added to the health care bill that will make it explicit that taxpayer money won't go toward abortions. Here's an exchange from ABC's "This Week," between Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and host George Stephanopoulos.STEPHANOPOULOS: Secretary Sebelius, what's wrong with that, making it explicit in the bill that no public funding should go toward abortions?SEBELIUS: Well, I think that's what the president intends to do. There's no intent to change the language that's in the current Medicaid statute, which has been there for years and provides insurance to millions of Americans....
John Acton once famously remarked that "power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely."As one apprises the state of the American left-leaning media, the former part of this maxim becomes almost immediately apparent.Once upon a time, the American left-wing derided the excesses of FOX News and other right-leaning media outlets. They were (often quite rightly) accused of being toadies for the governing Republican party, fear mongering, and otherwise helping to steamroll political dissent.A recent segment from MSNBC's Rachel Maddow show serves as a perfect example, wherein Maddow seeks to stir up fear of anti-health care reform protesters by comparing them to anti-abortion terrorists. In an interview with Dr George Hearn -- who himself has had many threats made against his life -- Maddow...
Anyone who follows the abortion debate in any way, shape or form -- or even watches the news in general -- remembers the pro-abortion lobby's reaction to the murder of Dr George Tiller.Naturally, they expressed outrage. Normally, there would be nothing at all wrong with this. After all, Dr Tiller's murder was an act of domestic terrorism and any proper-thinking individual should be outraged at it.The problem with the outrage of the pro-abortion lobby over the matter was that it was entirely feigned. They blamed the pro-abortion lobby as a whole for inciting the murder of Dr Tiller.Violence, one would think, is where the pro-abortion lobby would draw the line in terms of acceptable action.Think again. When 60-year-old James Canfield was nearly run over by an SUV while protesting at an...
New technology allows models to be made of the new 4D ultrasound images of babies in utero. Perhaps this will alert some to the fact that the fetus is more than just "a blob of flesh."Here is a video of a baby using 4D technology....
Pro-abortion zealots can't seem to stick to one reason to try to label all anti-abortion activists as terroristsThe sad, sad story to emerge out of the assassination of Dr George Tiller only continues to unfold. Perhaps this man's martyrdom will continue into perpetuity. In the immediate aftermath of Dr Tiller's assassination, various pro-abortion bloggers tried to pin it as squarely on the anti-abortion movement as a whole as they possibly could.Their argument at the time was that the "abortion is murder" rhetoric employed by so many members of the anti-abortion lobby was responsible for encouraging -- perhaps even mandating -- Dr Tiller's murder.Consider this particular passage from Mike from (ir)Rational Reasons:"I cannot express in words the rage I am feeling right now.Not just at the...
Accountability for "hateful rhetoric": it's only for the anti-abortion lobbyThe murder of Dr George Tiller was a terrorist atrocity. This was a line of argument that some, including Robert Peter John Day, fell absolutely in love with.In this case, it was rightfully so. They were right to denounce Dr Tiller's murder as terrorism. They would be right to denounce all instances in which abortion providers had been attacked as terrorism, even if they were extremely show to that particular punch. But the pro-abortion lobby started to significantly overreach when they started to insist that the entire anti-abortion lobby was to blame for Tiller's assassination. The argument was that the anti-abortion lobby had spread hateful rhetoric that had encouraged overzealous activists to murder Tiller as...
I oppose the murder of George Tiller, but I also think abortion is wrong. I don'twant an outright ban on abortion, but there is no law in Canada to protect even a fetus at 9 months gestation in this country. That is wrong....
...Yet she's the one making a toastLet it never be said that Joyce Arthur doesn't have a gift for arriving late to the party. This evening in Vancouver, Arthur's Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada will join with numerous other pro-abortion groups in order to rally in the memory of the assassinated Dr George Tiller -- only a mere three weeks after he was killed, and 12 days after his funeral. But the protest isn't merely about Dr Tiller's death. It's also about promoting the opening of more facilities that will offer late-term abortion in Canada.“It’s a scandal that women are forced to travel to Kansas for these procedures,” Arthur says.Arthur insists that the idea that late-term abortions are ever performed on healthy fetuses is a misconception. “People think there are women out...
The hateful left refuses to relinquish Tiller-bombThe sad tale of the pro-abortion lobby's efforts to transform the murder of Dr George Tiller into a permanent rhetorical advantage seemed to have slowed recently, but sadly, some members of the radical pro-abortion lobby insist on continuing the effort.Their argument has been, more or less, that the anti-abortion lobby is complicit in the Tiller murder by virtue of the numerous anti-abortion extremists who describe abortion as "murder".Even in the face of the actual positions of their opponents, the hateful left simply refuses to relinquish the death of Dr Tiller as a club with which they can beat anyone who dares disagree with them on the topic of abortion. One merely has to consider the sheer depth of the effort that the most recent...
The attempts of Canada's hateful left -- a parochial collection of demagogues whose left-wing politics are defined not by any definable beliefs, but rather by their hatred of those with whom they disagree -- to transform the assassination of Dr George Tiller into a centerpiece of their efforts seem to have slowed in recent days. For those mourning the murder of Dr Tiller for legitimate reasons, this should certainly be a welcome prospect. But even as they continue to demonstrate that they don't understand their own base hypocrisy on the issue, there is still far more hilarity afoot than the degree to which these individuals simply cannot be taken seriously, or granted so much as an iota of credibility. The unrepentant leader of Canada's hateful left, Canadian Cynic, provides yet another keen...
An interesting article in the WSJ. I met and spoke to Dr Harrison , when he came to speak at McGill last year. He also will not do abortions after 18 weeks( as does Morgentaler). In Canada abortions have no limit on time of gestation. There are not very many physicians that will do this procedure. I think this may be aprtly that there are more Indeed Dr Harrison is in his 70's and is the only abortionist for many miles in his town in Arkansas. When I spoke to Dr Harrison, we had a very civil discussion, inspite of our fundamental differences. In Canada and the US, the number of doctors willing to do abortions is shrinking. Some may start doing this procedure because of the murer of Dr Tiller. Another reason to utterly condemn his murder. His murder is bad for the cause and is of course...
