Every few years the BC Lions Society has been presenting a public art installation involving pieces decorated by local artists that would then be auctioned off. We had Bears in the City, Orcas in the City, Eagles in the City, and to coincide with the Royal BC Museum’s upcoming exhibit, we’ll have the Terracotta Warrior Public Art Project in 2011.

Unlike the bears, orcas and eagles, there will only be a limited number of terracotta pieces around the city. Artists will be given a 7-foot tall fiberglass replica of a terracotta warrior to use as their canvas. The pieces will then be placed around the Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria from November 2011 until April 2012 and they are currently looking for sponsors for the pieces to get the...

The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art is hosting the Public Aboriginal Art Walk throughout the city from June 17th until July 11th. This coincides with National Aboriginal Day this coming Monday, June 21st.
You can download the Art Walk kit for free online to start your walk anytime. Each sheet lists five pieces of public aboriginal art, their locations, their names, and a trivia question that you can answer by looking at the pieces.

Often you can’t go a full city block in Vancouver without encountering a piece of public art. Vancouver Biennale has quite a bit to do with that but now we have even more sculptures, installations, and statues that have been put in place as an Olympic legacy. About 20 permanent and temporary public artworks were commissioned for the 2010 Winter Games and among them are eight legacy sites that feature works from veteran and up-and-coming artists.
The legacy sites have the following pieces on display until December 2010 or later:

The Vancouver Art Gallery is icon in our city and was a central hub of activity during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and although the building won’t be going anywhere… it’s what’s inside that counts.

A relocation, that would see it move out of the old courthouse building, has been in the works for a few years. The first plan was to build a new facility for the art gallery in North East False Creek to accompany the expanding collection however plans have changed.
The 604 Homes Blog covered the then-approved move in 2008:
“Late last week the City of Vancouver approved the plan to build a brand new art gallery on the site of the old Plaza of Nations. The re-development would also include the a number of new highrise...

The Vancouver Transit Adspace Re-appropriation Project or V-TARP is an art-in-transit installation that “intends to reclaim the highly sought after mindspace used by corporations to communicate with the public, by collecting artworks from across the globe and installing them in the transit adspace.”

You’ll notice overhead pieces on buses and SkyTrains already by two Vancouver artists, Jerm IX and Vegas however not one has been officially sanctioned. The duo place their work in vacant transit ad spaces, often providing thought-provoking or clever messaging.

I attended the CanStage production of Art, written by Yasmina Reza. I saw this play in 2000, produced by the Mirvish group. It is an interesting play about modern art and friendship. The set was sllek and modern. It was an amazing cast including Colin Mochrie. Evan Buliung and Peter Donaldson were also excellent. The play was funny, yet thought provoking. All in all an excellent one act play.
Here is another production of the play.

Walking home at night lately it just reminds me that something BIG is about to happen in Vancouver. As those beams stretch to the highest of clouds, I can feel the City’s excitement growing as my own hopes for Vancouver 2010 come even closer to being a reality.
All that being said, quite simply it’s a really cool light show....
Another great piece by Barbara Kay. Much of so called modern conceptual art has exposed itself as so much dreck.Hirst’s naked-emperor moment is propelling ripples of mortification through the art world. As an online Guardian columnist conceded: “It is not just Hirst who is implicated in this exposure. It is an entire idea of art that triumphed in the 1990s and still dominates our culture.”An airing of the art world’s unhealthy deference to “an entire idea of art” — i.e. that concept is all, technique nothing — is long overdue. Conceptual art, whose roots go back to the 1960s, privileges ironic statement and self-reflexive cleverness over talent and discipline. Pioneering conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner built his celebrity stencilling superfluous words on walls in capital...

Okay any past comments I’ve ever made about Richard Ouzounian over at the Star are off the table. He’s given my brother’s play, Courageous, 3.5 stars out of 4.
You may recall I was privileged to be able to read a near-final draft of the play last month and I’ll be honest, after my first reading, I didn’t think it was going to be accessible to the general public (my brother nervously confessed he was worried about “this one not being any good” as we left a family dinner). However, I’m in agreement with Richard O when he says that Micheal’s writing “make(s) your head spin long after the curtain has fallen.” I’ve been thinking a lot of the nuances within the play, the writing, and I’m looking forward to seeing......

You all may know my brother writes plays for a living.
Stop laughing. Obviously he’s doing well… he owns, not rents.
He’s prepped to release his next play called Courageous and before he started his press scrum, he emailed a copy to myself and my other gay, legally married brother with this question:
I’m about to open an new play here and will be doing inevitable interviews about it. It’s about the charter of rights and freedoms, and in the course of it, there’s a gay couple who are denied the opportunity to get married at city hall. Are you guys okay if I mention that both my gay sibs got married here in Toronto, one at city hall?
Bless his heart. I stealthily read the play at work and I’m suitably impressed (I’m sure I missed a few...
