ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corps. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps was the original ANZAC formation. It served at Gallipoli under the command of General William Birdwood and comprised the Australian 1st Division and the New Zealand and Australian Division. The Gallipoli Campaign took place at Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey from 25 April 1915 to 9 January 1916, during the First World War. Today was not a good day for General Motors and Chrysler. Rick Waggoner was shown the door by Washington and GM was told in no uncertain terms that bankruptcy was an option for them. Chrysler was told they have 30 days to convince Fiat they have a future or it was curtains for them. However what was worst was the realization that the future of bloated SUVs and mediocre mileage was well and truly over when Berkshire Hathaway announced that the BYD plugin hybrid vehicle will be on display in May at Buffett’s general shareholder meeting in Omaha.

Avis gave me one, and I liked it.
It’s big, and while the lines are
kind of boring, the trim and lights and so on are pretty cool. I drove
three other guys to lunch; there was plenty of room and I got gratifying
exclamations all around when I slotted the electrokey doohickey,
pushed the button, and whispered out of the parking lot.
It kept up in the fast lane on 101 just fine, and had a pretty
decent cockpit with a nice seat and radio and so on.
Anyhow, this big smooth coaster averaged just over 28mpg zipping around the
Valley for a couple of days; not bad at......

I was going to be driving up and down the Valley for the best part of four
days and Avis bollixed up my reso somehow so the usual mostly-harmless
mid-size wasn’t available. “Wanna Blazer?” the redcoat said and I said
“Whatever”; F2F with the Blazer I was reminded it’s an SUV the size
of one of new high-density Vancouver townhouses. I couldn’t face the thought
of hauling this ill-formed mass of steel up and down the California tarmac,
and as I was walking back to say “No” passed a row of Prii so I said
“Prius” instead and the guy said “You sure? They’re weird, no key, can’t
figure ’em out myself.” And you know, it’s not bad at all.

We’re looking for a mini-van or equivalent, and it seems like the industry
really wants to sell us something less useful for more money.
While our Audi’s
been in the shop,
two of the replacements were mini-vans, and we had an epiphany when we put in
the two kids in car seats and there was still room for luggage and camping
equipment.
So some sort of loaf-of-bread-shaped vehicle seems to be in our future.

Lauren subscribes to their website for $26/year, and it’s just the thing when you
want to look up cordless drills or baby strollers. The price seems fair,
maybe a little low actually, and the potential market of subscribers seems
almost infinitely large.
Since the site offers a task-oriented approach, why would you ever
subscribe to the paper version?...

I can remember, back in the day, when we were arguing about user interfaces
we said “It should be as intuitive as a car is. Any experienced driver can
get in a new, strange, car and figure it out in minutes.” Well, I’ve been
using a bunch of different computers and driving a bunch of different cars
lately, and I think we’re there. With a sad picture and some automotive
micro-reviews.
What happened was, our nice Audi station wagon got into a fight with a
Mercedes M-class, and well, we didn’t win.
As a result, in the last month, we’ve driven, along with the usual
