From Fade (audio engineering): “Neptune”, part of the orchestral suite, The Planets, by Gustav Holst, was the first piece of music to have a fade-out ending. Holst stipulates that the women’s choruses are “to be placed in an adjoining room, the door of which is to be left open until the last bar of the piece, when it is to be slowly and silently closed”, and that the final bar (scored for choruses alone) is “to be repeated until the sound is lost in the distance”. Although commonplace today, the effect bewitched audiences in the era before widespread recorded sound—after the initial 1918 run-through, Holst’s daughter Imogen (in addition to watching the charwomen dancing in the aisles during “Jupiter”) remarked that the ending...

For me, one of those (besides Watties Baked Beans) is Tintin, a Belgium comic series that is widely popular 80 years after it was first penned by author Belgian artist Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi (1907–1983). The series first appeared in French in a children’s supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle on 10 January 1929. The hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful fox terrier dog Snowy (Milou in French). image Our kiwi friend Rhy Darby AKA Murray from Flight of the Conchords stars with Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Boat That Rocked. It’s about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that was determined to control the air waves. Like a lot of countries (including New Zealand, remember Radio Hauraki), the laws about broadcasting were strickly controlled by licenses, mostly public owned systems.  It took a small band of music lovers, and a mobile transmittering station, preferably 3 miles off the coast to keep the music alive. Radio Hauraki officially started broadcasting on December 4, 1966 on board the Tiri off the coast of NZ. During the next 2 years, the crew on the Tiri would endure adverse weather...
