This October, Jerry and I (along with several of our good friends) will be attending the “Setting the Agenda: Secular Humanism’s Next 30 Years” CFI conference in Los Angeles! I am just *beyond excited* about all the speakers I’ll get to hear and the people I’ll finally be able to meet. Here’s part of the conference description: Scheduled speakers include Richard Dawkins, who will accept a very special award (to be announced); authors Sam Harris and Robert Wright, who will dialogue on humanist stances toward faith; and a glittering roster of speakers, including James Randi, P. Z. Myers, Eugenie Scott, Paul Kurtz, Lawrence Krauss, Chris Mooney, Jennifer Michael Hecht, Victor Stenger, Shadia Drury, Mark Johnson, Barry Kosmin, Ibn Warraq, and many more. Oh....

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/12/happy-birthday-keira.html.Today is my friend Keira’s birthday. She’s another year older, another year wiser, another year prettier (to make up for the older comment), and another year full of friendship, respect, and kindness. Keira is one of the few people I can trust to listen without judgment if I need to pour out my soul, and she’s also a very good influence when it comes to skipping dinner and eating ice cream instead. She also knows that she can rely on me in the very same way. Although we didn’t meet through blogging at all,...

The Things That Matter Part 2 via Miss604's Vancouver Blog by Vancouver Blogger and Podcaster Rebecca Bollwitt March 7th, 2008 at 21:27

image Copyright © 2008 Miss604 - Rebecca Bollwitt. Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/03/the-things-that-matter-part-2.html.After a tumultuous week in the blogosphere I usually have to pull myself back and discover real life and real love all over again. Don’t get me wrong, I love the blogging and the community that’s embraced me, but sometimes you just need those… tangibles. I’ve written a post about The Things that Matter, which holds true today and is ever more convincing after reading posts like this from my friends. I had planned on writing about social media news releases today, the new Eagles in the City and a few more items but after being up all night waiting for my baby nephew to arrive into this world - there’s nothing more...

On Social Networks, There Are “Friends” And There Are *Friends* via Deep Jive Interests March 5th, 2008 at 14:43

image Steve Hodson, whose Winextra probably doesn’t get the attention that it deserves — it is an excellent blog and you should subscribe to it right now (go on, I’ll wait) — ranted a little on the Friend Economy yesterday and it got me thinking about “friends” in general that you might or might not make, as Web2.0 sites proliferate. With the increased (personal) adoption of Twitter and Friendfeed, I’m getting the chance of “friending” a whole *lot* of people that I’ve never even seen or heard. In some respects this is a good thing, as I am getting the chance to meet more and more bloggers that don’t get the publicity that some of the larger blogs (or the linklove therein). On the other hand — blindly “adding”...

No, I don’t want to add more Zombies via mathewingram.com/work February 21st, 2008 at 15:39

image Facebook continues to tighten up some of the rules that govern how applications on the social network’s platform operate, giving users more control over what they allow and when, and making it easier for them to block “bad” applications and prevent the social-networking spam that has been piling up on Facebook over the past six months or so. Like Dare Obasanjo, I’m wondering why it took so long. The worst thing about all the Zombie requests and movie quiz invites and all of that spam is that it comes from your friends. Occasionally I even find myself swearing under my breath at them (no, not you, Aunt Mabel) because they are so persistent — and then I realize that it’s not really their fault, and that the way many applications are set up, you are all...

Facebook: Making a list, checking it twice via mathewingram.com/work December 19th, 2007 at 18:32

image Justin Smith at Inside Facebook has the 411 on a new feature on Facebook — everyone’s social-networking walled garden of choice, it seems. The site now allows you to create (gasp) lists of friends, and then easily send messages to one list or another (don’t worry, no one will see whether you’ve put your boss or your high-school pal on the “Mostly Ignore” list). This comes along just as Mark Cuban is wrestling with how to rank his 5,000 friends — so now he can create three lists: people more important than me (a small list, I’m sure); people as important as me (also small, I would imagine); and everyone else. Share This...

New Year’s Resolutions via The Adventures of Accordion Guy in the 21st Century :: Joey deVilla's Personal Weblog January 2nd, 2007 at 19:11

It's traditional to list one's New Year's resolutions, so here are some off the top of my head... Lower my cholesterol. No need for the Lipitor yet -- my doctor says it's a little high, but not so high that it can't be fixed with some changes to diet and exercise. Get back into the shape I was in in 2002. Being single and working at home were great for my gym schedule. I was eating pretty low-carb and working out nearly daily. The gym was also a social thing -- in addition to the weights and exercise machines, I joined and became a regular at a couple of classes -- BodyAttack and BodyPump -- that I don't think I'd be able to complete at the moment. I'd like to get back to that point because I felt good, and damn, did I look it, too. Defeat "Cletus" in Dead Rising. I need to defeat him...
