National Post and the atypical grits? via Dr Roy's Thoughts January 20th, 2010 at 11:18

A group that includes Ray Heard, Senator Grafstein and Beryl Wajsman (among others) want to buy the National Post, Montreal Gazette and Ottawa Citizen. Wajsman was on Tommy Schnurmacher's show yesterday. I asked him about 3 grits owning the conservative NP. He assured me that these were atypical, conservative? grits. Wajsman insists the character of the Post will notchamge. I certainly hope not. This may all be moot since the banks have said they want to sell the whole group together. Listen here(I'm on after the contest winner)....

mop and pail via Dr Roy's Thoughts January 12th, 2010 at 20:34

I stopped reading the mop and pail some time ago. I will read the occasional piece by Rex Murphy, Christie Blatchford or Margaret Wente. They seem to have pushed out Rex and attacked Christie recently. The mop used to be a small c conservative pro monarchist paper. It is now a leftist republican rag like the red star with a stable of grit minions. It also has been having financial problems lately. Maybe Lord Thompson should jettison it from his empire. The Post has it right, the mop has been wrong 21 years and counting. The Globe and Mail has been predicting the demise of the National Post for 11 years now, and counting. Before that, they spent 10 years incorrectly predicting the demise of the Financial Post, which went from a weekly to a daily in 1988 in direct competition to the Globe's...

Let National Post go under, please! via Werner Patels - Telling It Like It Is December 1st, 2009 at 00:51

image For too long, Canadians had been fed only one side of the story, that is, the political left’s views on current events – until the National Post arrived ten years ago. It was refreshing to finally be able to hold a newspaper in one’s hands that was not afraid to tell the truth about Liberals, the fiasco that is Canada’s immigration system and the mental disease known as political correctness. Naturally, as the National Post has gone into bankruptcy proceedings, Canadians are afraid of losing one vital aspect in the world of media. But is that really so? Is the National Post really such a key contributor to the conservative movement as the left, and many on the right, always claim? Let me allow to shock you, dear readers, and state quite unequivocally that I think that we –...

My latest letter in praise of the NP via Dr Roy's Thoughts November 3rd, 2009 at 15:06

I love Star Trek and I am a big fan of the NP so I combined the two in my latest letter to the editor.'Live long and prosper, NP'National Post Published: Tuesday, November 03, 2009Your newspaper has helped improve the other Toronto-based papers. It is nice to have a place where not just the leftists are allowed to speak. So as Spock would say, "Live long and prosper, NP."Roy Eappen, Montreal....

Good News: NP lives to fight another day via Dr Roy's Thoughts October 30th, 2009 at 21:41

I was a bit worried that the NP was going to close down today. Fortunately I was wrong. I am hopeful that the NP will survive the CanWest troubles. The National Post will be transferred to Canwest's publishing division along with the rest of its newspaper assets following court and lender approval Friday. The Post, which turned 11 years old this week, will be part of Canwest Limited Partnership (LP), which operates 10 major city dailies, two smaller market dailies, 26 community newspapers and a host of Internet properties across the country. Previously, it was held by Canwest Global Communications Corp's holding company Canwest Media Inc. (CMI), which also has Global Television and a number of specialty channels. CMI remains under creditor protection in order to reorganize its assets and...

Another Great NP editorial via Dr Roy's Thoughts July 30th, 2009 at 21:59

The NP points out more leftist hypocrisy.National Post editorial board: Selective support for fashionable causesPosted: July 30, 2009, 10:00 AM by NP EditorEditorial, Full CommentDiversity. Tolerance. Multiculturalism. Anti-discrimination. These are the supposedly universal values that inform our secular cultural canon. The words sound nice. The problem is that they're not actually "universal." Western societies -- Canada included -- exhibit zero-tolerance attitudes toward the vilification of certain minority groups. But it's no-holds-barred when it comes to bashing less politically fashionable constituencies. In Glasgow, Scotland, for instance, an artist named Jane Clark -- who is also a pastor at a radical Church-- says her friends felt excluded from the Bible because it does not include...

Terrence Cororan slaps down leftie simpson via Dr Roy's Thoughts July 15th, 2009 at 03:37

I am happy that HM PM Harper thinks that taxes are intrinsically bad. They are. I do see a need for some aspects of the state so I grudgingly accept some taxes. However the less tax the better. the grits and the other lefties love taxes. They love the control it gives them over the populace and they think they know how to spend our money better than we do. leftie simpson has never met a tax he didn't like except for the GST and now he doesn't want to cut that. The Reverend Jeffrey Simpson, keeper of The Globe and Mail’s firm grasp on conventional gospel, the Al Sharpton of Canadian Liberalism, an old fogie from the day he began writing his Globe column in 1949, knee-jerk anti-Conservative and now fire-and-brimstone preacher of climate doom, champion of carbon controls and higher...

Has the National Post gone crazy? via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense July 14th, 2009 at 07:42

image As if the National Post didn’t have enough (financial) trouble already. Now the paper seems to have decided to destroy its last remaining cash cow, its Full Comment blog. Full Comment has been very successful and popular since it was launched. Readers love going to the newspaper’s blog to comment on the stories of the day. Many of the posts (i.e., reposted editorials, columns and articles from the day’s print edition, as well as some extra material) receive 30, 50 or even around 100 comments. As of today, however, the articles published on the Full Comment blog have had the......

National Post: Lousy with facts via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense May 1st, 2009 at 06:26

image I have often said here that I am a fan of traditional newspapers. I read three newspapers every day – in the printed form, not online. But the National Post, which has just announced that it will drop its Monday paper for the summer – something that will probably become a permanent fixture in the future – has a problem with accuracy. Many of their journalists, columnists, etc. simply cannot get things right. I've highlighted a few of the examples of shoddy journalism found in that particular paper (here and here), and here's the latest one: On Crossing Jordan, she......

Very Troubling via Dr Roy's Thoughts April 15th, 2009 at 13:59

The lady who wants doctors to kill her with her husband is very troubling to me.As a physician, I oppose doctor assisted funeral. I will not institute heroic measures and will relieve suffering but Idon't think physicians, whose job is to perserve life should be seen as executioners by their patiens. It is even more troubling in this case. The wife is relatively healthy. This is in essence a form of voluntary sati. The idea of murdering a healthy individual is doubly revolting. Most people who want doctor assisted suicide have not ther pain and suffering dealt with by their caregivers. That is the whole concept of palliative care. The Post published my letter to the editor on the subject but there are a few typos( my mistakes) , which I have fixed here. First, do no harmNational...

A great idea via Dr Roy's Thoughts April 14th, 2009 at 15:21

The national Post is right. It is time to kill the equaliziation program. Today Ontario starts getting equalization money. Equalization serves little purpose now and is basically a waste of $14 billion. Time to use this money for across the board income tax cuts. While we might not agree with all-- or even most of-- Mr. Obama's policies, we admire the U. S. President's instinct for seizing the moment to bring about radical changes that might not otherwise see daylight. Stephen Harper's government should do likewise here in Canada, seizing this opportunity to eliminate our outdated equalization...

Toxic multiculturalism via Dr Roy's Thoughts March 31st, 2009 at 12:29

I haven't written a letter to the editor in a while. I did write one recently to praise HM Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason kenney's efforts to reform Canada' s policy on multiculturalism.Give them 'a multiculturalism of inclusion, not ghettoization'National Post I was born in India, and am now a proud Canadian. Many so-called "ethnic" Canadians resent the toxic, self-serving Liberal version of multiculturalism, which is no more than a vote-buying scheme. We want a multiculturalism of inclusion, not ghettoization.Roy Eappen,...

In case you were wondering why the National Post is going down via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense February 22nd, 2009 at 08:27

image From its very first day, the National Post has stood out for one thing: hiring the sloppiest wannabe writers/journalists in Canada. For most Post writers, it seems, the comparative is formed using "that" in lieu of "than" (e.g., he was greater that the other guy). They also have a big problem with irregular verbs (e.g., I would have wrote but ...). Add to this tons of typos, omitted words and other major grammar mistakes in every single article that this newspaper prints, and you know why I am not a fan.To their linguistic shortcomings, and generally lousy writing style, you......

A Canadian media empire on death’s doorstep via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense February 13th, 2009 at 09:28

image It appears, from recent reports, that Canwest is on the verge of filing for bankruptcy protection. Debt-laden Canwest Global Communications Corp, Canada's biggest media company, may face bankruptcy as the weak economy wreaks havoc on its stable of television stations and newspapers, and buyers for its assets fail to materialize. Canwest, publisher of the National Post daily newspaper, has said it will try to exit non-core businesses and is considering the sale of five conventional TV stations. But analysts say there may not be any prospective purchasers waiting in the wings. Canwest is trying to unload its E! Canada channels,......

Good via Dr Roy's Thoughts January 20th, 2009 at 13:49

image The National Post posted a profit for the last quarter of 2008. That is good news, particularly in the bad economic times. It seems CanWest is actively trying to keep the Post alive. Now if they can only keep all of CanWest alive.National Post records Q1 profitGrant Surridge, Financial Post Published: Wednesday, January 14, 2009Executives from Canwest Global Communications Corp. said Wednesday that for the first time in its 10-year history the National Post newspaper turned an operating profit.Leonard Asper, Canwest chief executive, described the profit recorded over the three months ended Nov. 30 as "modest."...

Abortion via Dr Roy's Thoughts January 3rd, 2009 at 13:35

image Colby Cosh wrote a piece called pro-life absurdity. I wrote in reply, but my letter was pared down quite a bit. Charles lewis wrote a longer response which made some of my points. Here is my edited letter.A miscarried argumentNational Post Published: Saturday, January 03, 2009It is Colby Cosh who seems to be rejecting modern science. A baby can survive outside the uterus by about 22 weeks of gestation. It has all of the characteristics of a human long before. I suggest Mr. Cosh view a 16 week ultrasound before dismissing pro-life arguments. The argument for drastically reducing the number of abortions and restricting abortion after about 18 weeks is as much biological as religious.Roy Eappen, MontrealMy original letter It is Colby Cosh who seems to be rejecting modern science. A baby can...

What goes around… via Dr Roy's Thoughts January 2nd, 2009 at 12:22

image I have another letter in the National Post. As I have written before in the National Post I am a Christian Zionist. I support the state of israel's right to defend herself. Hamas is using its own people to hide. It would be simple enough to stop the Israeli response. Stop sending rockets into Israel. What goes around, comes aroundNational Post Published: Friday, January 02, 2009Re: What Hamas Wants, George Jonas, Dec. 31.The people of Israel have every right to defend themselves against Hamas terrorists, who have repeatedly sent rockets into Israel. Hamas was repeatedly warned; no one should be surprised that Israel has decided to defend its land and citizens.I am saddened by the loss of life in Gaza. The people of Gaza should blame Hamas for their woes. After all, what would Hamas have...

National Post - a goner? via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense December 18th, 2008 at 20:21

image As Warren Kinsella recounts, the National Post and Canwest are in dire straits. What really seems to be dragging them down, though, is the National Post, because most of the other Canwest papers, such as the Calgary Herald, are doing just fine. The National Post has made a number of mistakes – too many to list them all. One thing, though, is that their newspaper is given over to single issues way too often. If you, as a reader, don't care about the specific issue, then you might just as well toss the entire paper of that day into...

The NP on Manley and the grits via Dr Roy's Thoughts December 8th, 2008 at 16:19

image An interesting editorial in the National Post. The NP writes that Manley is giving the grits a scapegoat in delusional dion. The NP points out that iggy or rae could have blocked the coup. Let's face the real truth here, the coup plotters care little about the economy, they just want their electoral welfare. I also think that the pundits who say that HM PM Harper has been badly wounded are also wrong. There are few in the party calling for change of leadership. As I have said before HM PM Harper i slooking at the long game. I also think we are looking for a political leader not an infallible pope. I hope that eliminating electoral welfare will be a plank in the next campaign. I guess this nonsense will also stop the legislation to get rid of loans to pay for leadership campaigns. This...

Dr Roy on Full Comment via Dr Roy's Thoughts November 25th, 2008 at 22:38

image One of my many letters to the editor got very long so I submitted it as a Full Comment Piece. Dr. Roy Eappen: Tories need to show backbone on private carePosted: November 25, 2008, 1:00 PM by Kelly McParlandFull Comment, Canadian politics, Dr. Roy EappenI attended the recent Conservative policy convention in Winnipeg as a delegate, where I spoke in favour of policy P106, which introduced the possibility of allowing some private care.P 106 was an attempt to “encourage the provinces and territories to further experiment with different means of delivering universal health care, utilizing both the public and private health sectors.” It was a fairly timid attempt to encourage alternate solutions to our health care problems.Stephen Fletcher, a former Tory health critic and present...

Free-speechers and their less-than-concealed bigotry via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense November 8th, 2008 at 04:04

image by Werner Patels Traumatic events can trigger a lot of different responses in people. This is also what happened after the horrific terror attacks on 9/11 and 7/7, which gave rise to widespread anti-Muslim and anti-Islam sentiment. Such bigotry and racism is easily explained in psychological terms: people feeling violated and powerless need to find a scapegoat in order to cope with tragedy. Sometimes these feelings are only temporary, such as the usual knee-jerk reactions one sees in the aftermath of disaster or crime. At other times, though, they become ingrained and can last a lifetime. Fortunately, many people...

Infidel Blogger awards - Stupidity Award? via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense November 7th, 2008 at 07:29

image It seems the National Post has launched, or at least thrown its weight behind, an "Infidel Blogger Award". Don't you think that this is all a bit on the silly side? I mean, the category for best blog post about insulting the prophet is beyond the pale. I am not a Muslim, but imagine if a major national newspaper in Canada started handing out blog awards for blog posts "most insulting to God or Jesus Christ". Don't get me wrong: I am not saying that a human rights complaint should be filed over stuff like that. What I am...

The National Post: Folding soon? via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense November 2nd, 2008 at 04:50

image After the recent announcement that the National Post will no longer be available in Manitoba and Saskatchewan comes this "insider tip" that the newspaper's vendor boxes will disappear in Ottawa, the nation's capital: You will no longer be able to buy copies of the National Post out of a vendor box in Ottawa as of Midnight tonight. I've heard this from two sources, one being this anonymous commenter on Bourrie's site, the other an Ottawa area resident (via private e-mail) who helpfully suggests that the boxes be converted to ice-cream machines. Today, the Calgary Herald announced a "merger", effective...

National Post cuts back via Werner Patels - A Dose of Common Sense October 31st, 2008 at 19:47

image Bad news for people in Saskatchewan and Manitoba: The Winnipeg Free Press has returned to doorsteps and newspaper boxes after a 16-day strike ended earlier this week, but the National Post won't be showing up alongside it. The Post is printed by the Free Press for circulation in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, but the national paper's owner, Winnipeg's David Asper, has decided to cut the paper's availability in the two provinces. Home delivery is being eliminated, as are print editions of the paper on weekdays. The printed version of the paper will only be available in stores on Saturdays in...

Steve Janke in the National Post via Dr Roy's Thoughts October 31st, 2008 at 14:29

image I just noticed Steve Janke was in the NP. Congratulations Steve. Great article! The sniveling grits are looking very sad lately. He does seem to believe there is a serious likelihood that the Liberals, the NDP and the Bloc can actually merge. If he advocated this move based on some significant overlap in philosophy and platform, fine. I'd like to see a serious deconstruction of their platforms and philosophies to show that a merger would actually work. Really impress me by adding columns for the Bloc Quebecois and the Green Party, and show that there is nothing holding back full consolidation of what I think is inaccurately labeled "The Left".Inaccurate because only Liberals like Lloyd Axworthy talk about mergers. Others like me realize that the Liberals aren't on the Left, or not by...

Rich and poor via Dr Roy's Thoughts October 25th, 2008 at 02:51

image An interesting editorial on rich and poor in Canada. Seems everybody is doing well. The rich and the poor and everyone inbetween are getting richer.Admirably unequalNational Post Published: Friday, October 24, 2008 The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) handed out report cards on income inequality this week, and Canada received what you might call a C-minus. From 1970 onward, according to the OECD, Canada exhibited increasingly flat income distributions; but since the mid-1990s, when equality peaked, the rich have been growing richer more quickly than the poor....

We like Harper via Dr Roy's Thoughts October 16th, 2008 at 12:23

The hrcs are a continuing threat to our freedom!.We like Harper ...National Post Published: Thursday, October 16, 2008I would have preferred a Conservative majority, but the election results are pretty good. I hope the Tories will use this renewed mandate to de-fang the human rights commissions. Section 13a of the federal HRC act is an abomination against freedom of speech and must be repealed.
