image Blogathon is returning to Vancouver this year as I will once again be hosting an on-location event August 21st. Kristi Ferguson from Fraser Valley Pulse will be heading up Blogathon Fraser Valley on the same day with another on-location event so we’ll have the region well-covered. Raul will be helping me with the Vancouver event as we’ll be celebrating our 5th year of Blogathon’ing together. How it works Bloggers sign up to blog for 24 hours straight, publishing an original post every 30 minutes (think walk-a-thon or spell-a-thon etc.) They do this marathon blogging in order to raise funds for the charity of their choice. The collect donations online to help keep them going. We will be arranging CanadaHelps donation pages for all registered Blogathon Vancouver &...

image Five Hole for Food will see Vancouver hockey bloggers taking to the streets across Canada this summer to play hockey and raise funds for local Food Banks. The tour will stop in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria and wrap things up in Vancouver this July. “I love hockey and I wanted to find a way to turn my passion into something that could give back to the community,” said participating blogger, player and campaign founder Richard Loat (@Mozy19 on Twitter). “Being a proud Canadian, it occurred to me that in the name of community and charity we could play hockey for a good cause and thus Five Hole for Food was born.” Richard will be joined by over a dozen other bloggers including my old Crazy Canucks podcast co-host, JJ...

Vancouver’s Next Top Charity 2010 via Vancouver Blog Miss 604 June 1st, 2010 at 18:00

image Photo by: ng.kelven Social media can be used for many purposes: sharing what you just ate for breakfast, finding out the score of the hockey game, or connecting with colleagues. One of my favourite aspects of the medium is that it can also be used for social good. Vancouver’s Next Top Charity is a video contest to help promote the under-promoted non-profits in our city. To enter, the 12 finalist contestants produced a quick video about their organization. These entries are now up on the public voting page. The entry with the most votes will receive a prize pack including goodies from the sponsor companies as well as a cash donation to give them a boost. There is also an auction on the contest’s website that will help raise the donation prize funds. Auction items include a...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2010/03/sfu-wins-spread-the-net-challenge.html.I was at Simon Fraser University last September for the launch of the Spread the Net challenge and it was a pleasure to be back to hear the announcement that they were the winning school. The challenge was to see which school across Canada could raise the most in support of Spread the Net’s mosquito net campaign with UNICEF. On Monday I sat down for a chat with campaign co-founder, Rick Mercer who is the host of CBC’s The Mercer Report. We chatted about SFU’s victory and how social media played a role. Got Socks? Help ChangeEverything via Vancouver Blog Miss 604 by Rebecca Bollwitt December 8th, 2009 at 17:00

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2009/12/got-socks-help-changeeverything.html.Over the years ChangeEverything.ca has been doing much more than blog about social and environmental causes — they’ve been taking action. Three years ago contributor Kate Dugas decided to take to the streets of Vancouver, moving from the online realm into a real life situation where support was greatly needed. I thought about collecting some clothes and blankets from my house and bringing them to local shelters and quickly realized that I couldn’t drive my 20 year old car with its all-season tires anywhere. I was stuck. It felt pretty awful to want to do something to help but to have barrier like this get in the way. I imagined that others were...

Vancouver Twestival Tickets are Now on Sale via Vancouver Blog Miss 604 by Rebecca Bollwitt September 1st, 2009 at 17:14

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2009/09/vancouver-twestival-tickets-are-now-on-sale.html.For the second time this year, I am organizing a Twestival event in Vancouver. Twestival is a global fundraising event that is organized through Twitter, using the service to gather volunteers, get community input, invite participants, and publicize the event. Twestival will be like a meetup, where you can show up, have some food, win some prizes, and enjoy some entertainment. 100% of ticket sales go directly to the cause of choice. There was a public vote a few weeks ago and Vancouver chose to support the BC Childrens Hospital Foundation. Below are the event specifics, which I posted earlier on the Twestival Vancouver website: Tickets for...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2009/06/blogathon-vancouver-2009-save-the-date.html.Last year the official Blogathon.org site was out of commission so I took it upon myself to organize Blogathon Vancouver for those in the city that were interested in keeping the tradition alive. This year, the global event is back in full force taking place July 25th from 6am until 6am on July 26th. Over the last three years I have been involved with Blogathon, either as a cheerleader, donor, participant, or local organizer. Essentially it’s a blogging marathon where participants publish one post on their blog each half hour for 24 hours. Along the way they collect pledges and donations online for the cause of their choice. With the official system...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/09/paws-for-a-cause-in-vancouver.html.There’s just one day to go in the Benji, Casey, Pete and Bella campaign for Paws for a Cause. For months now Keira has been fundraising for this very worthy organization and Matt (who helped Duane and I with the Blogathon) also backed the fundraising effort with updates on his website. To me they are not my pets, they are my family, and therefore my equals – and I treat them as such every day of their lives. My unconditional love for my dogs is equal to that felt for my family and dearest friends. I would, without...
