These weren’t your regular spam or virus attacks, these were mighty serious. There wasn’t much I could have done to prevent these, or to get my site back online, but by detecting vulnerabilities or even the attack early, you have a better chance at a speedy recovery. Malware Attack Almost two weeks ago now my site was attacked with malware. Malware or malicious software can be anything from an uploaded image file to code that someone hacked into your server to paste into a file. What was happening When you would Google my site, results for Miss604.com did not come up with the proper titles....

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2010/03/vancouver-2010-the-final-tally.html.On the very last day of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games I cried twice. Once, when Sidney Crosby’s goal got past a stellar Ryan Miller, and once again when Neil Young was singing as the flame disappeared from the Olympic cauldron. It’s been seven years in the making and even though it’s gone, I did my best to document every waking moment. I promised to cover the Games so here are some numbers… Events attended: 3 (women’s hockey, pairs figure skating, alpine) Posts: 118 (in total about Vancouver 2010) Comments received: 2180 Posts about pavilions: 17 Flickr photos: 608 Athlete press conference photos: 21 Tweets: 841 Badges...

I plan on staying around town, making one quick day trip to Whistler, being extremely busy covering events for you all to enjoy, and watching the best in the world excel in their sport. I wanted to take a moment to profile where my coverage can be found during the Olympics. BC Living Magazine: Over the next four weeks I will be providing original articles on various facets of the Olympics for BC Living. In their exclusive Games section they have everything from athlete profiles to TV listings and sporting news. You can read my first article that was posted last week that...

I had an overwhelming response of almost 200 entries which was actually the most to date on any Miss604.com contest. In the video below I mention there were 92 comments on the site but I did in fact get in the last minute comments, bumping it up to about 96. And the winner is… I’d like to thank everyone for helping to spread the word and I do...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2009/01/2008-in-review-july-to-december.html.This is part two of my 2008 review in photos, covering July through December. After writing 840 posts throughout the year and welcoming a half-million readers to my site, 2008 was a phenomenal year. July 2008 July 2008 Archives I was a media partner for Surrey’s Canada Day celebration (the largest of its kind in Western Canada) so John and I hung out in Cloverdale, enjoyed the sunshine and caught some great concerts. A few days later I arranged blogger day at Playland with a few super cool friends. In July I also...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/12/2008-in-review-january-to-june.html.I’ve decided to do a photo post for my official “year in review” but going through my iPhoto and Flickr archives I realized it would be impossible to only choose one photo to represent each month. I’ve decided to do this recap of 2008 in two posts, January to June then July to December (which will follow later) each with photos representing each month. January January 2008 Archives Several big things happened in January, the first was meeting Tom Larscheid and John Shorthouse up in the broadcast gondola...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/09/what-it-all-means.html.In the last ten days alone, I’ve had the chance to meet and chat with Canadian beer-making legends, interview my all time favourite band (and one of Keira’s favourite bands), talk local history with a Vancouver mayoral candidate, slow dance with the internet-famous, and meet a rock star who blogs. After coming down from Las Vegas, eleven live blogs, five events, and preparing for this week’s events (which include a hockey game, charity live blog, National Digital Media Day, and BarCamp) I have to take some time to share my...

My theme hero, John Bollwitt - Photo credit: Duane Storey on Flickr Over the last week or so John has done the bulk of the leg work to give the site a fresh new look for the summer, adding in some fun elements, softening the look and feel and even managing (somehow) to get me away from my beloved Verdana font. Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/05/wordcamp-gets-covered-in-the-24-hours.html.This morning edition of the daily commuter paper, 24 Hours Vancouver, has local radio host and tech columnist Buzz Bishop giving the low down on the happenings at last week’s WordCamp. As he was not in attendance, he cited my live blog for more info and included a huge photo of Lisa’s “Your Ad Here” sign on her bum. The image deals with the topic of advertising on blogs, however I wonder if he’s also tying it in with his column about saving face with Facebook, “don’t put up anything you wouldn’t want your mom to see.” I hope not, because on top of having a great sense of humour...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/02/miss604-stickers-are-here.html.While everyone is still waiting on their Moo cards, my good friend has mass-produced some stickers that I’ll be handing out to all who want them over the next few days. They are just like the image I have on my Macbook but now in a nice compact wallet-size! Special item of note - as these stickers were donated by my friend I’ve attached his business card so that if you’re in the market for some fancy stickers, shirts, embroidered caps for your baseball team and things of that nature, you can give him a buzz. If you’d fancy a Miss604 sticker just ask me at NV on Friday on Saturday, I’ll be around and as a volunteer and...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/02/a-series-of-tubes.html.Miss604.com will be going through some changes over the next little while. No, not those kinds of changes - and you probably won’t even notice a thing. We’re trying to keep up to date with the growth the site has seen in the last little while and as a result some upgrades will need to be made. I know mid-week is an undesirable time in which to perform such maintenance but I have no other choice. Please bear with me as the site may flutter in and out of consciousness for the next day or so but I assure you once everything’s back up and better than ever it will be worth the wait. Also, a new Miss604 contest will also be announced and...

I do, it’s true. I’m a closet wannabe Raincity girl (since I can no longer be a Bryght Girl). They do amazing work, they preach Drupalese to the masses and their folks have helped put Vancouver on the map in terms of being a tech hub in this country. What have they done for me lately though? Well, you may notice something new on the site… I’ve been working with Hubert to create the new banner and logo over the last few months, as he was kind enough to take on my project. Another big thanks goes to Robert Scales, who is now over in China setting up Raincity Shanghai. This group of...

Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2008/01/wireds-sexy-geeks-of-2007.html.Last February Tod Maffin’s photo outranked one of me in a bikini on my Flickr photo stream. This year, he was nominated as one of Wired’s “Sexiest Geeks of 2007“. Welcome to the third annual Wired News Sexiest Geeks contest! Every year, we nominate the smartest, sexiest and most Wired men and women of the year… …Remember, geeks are not just computer nerds. They’re dedicated to the point of being obsessed, so smart they scare you, and hot in a possibly undefinable way. We know you know what we mean. [Wired] Luckily, someone found me worthy (and geeky enough) to nominate me as well, which is pretty freakin’...

Going on Four Years of Blogging Miss604.com via Miss604's Canuck Life :: A Vancouver Blog November 30th, 2007 at 19:30

image As one of my favourite quotes from the Breakfast Club goes…. “So it’s sorta social, demented and sad, but social. Right?” Well, kinda. Photo credit: Duane Storey on Flickr It’s not too sad for me really, as I’m extremely grateful to be a part of what’s going on in this city over the last few years. I’m also very proud to have also passed the 1,000 blog post mark on this site, and to be entering Miss604.com’s fourth year of blogging. Years ago I was doing my little blog posts (with song lyrics as titles) about Surrey, cereal boxes, and hockey. I kept a distance from my readers and rarely mentioning much about my personal life, or my full name. Not that I suggest all anonymous bloggers reveal everything about themselves, but it was...

Advertising on Miss604 via Miss604's Canuck Life :: A Vancouver Blog September 5th, 2007 at 05:30

image I know I’m selling out, but it’s not that horrible I promise. After reading Rod Templeton and seeing John Chow and his bagillion-dollar ad revenues one too many times on The Lab I finally decided to start ramping up the monetization of the site. Yes, “monetize” is not my favourite word either but it’s about time I started doing a little more. If I can promote local business and get a little something out of the deal (after doing it for free all these years) I’m going to give it a whirl. Fewer gaudy Google Ads and links to sites and places people actually might visit in Vancouver? That’s the idea. The first ever paid advertisement, that isn’t a Google Ad, is for Money Coach. I have also included the Rio but that’s in exchange for some...

24 Hours Covers my 24 Hours via Miss604's Canuck Life :: A Vancouver Blog July 25th, 2007 at 15:58

image Since I decided to take part in Blogathon I’ve got some pretty good press for my cause, thanks to Buzz Bishop - local radio guy, tech blogger and proud new papa. You’ve heard of Walk-a-thons and Dance-a-thons, but what about a Blog-a-thon? This Saturday, bloggers around the world vow to post to their pages a minimum of every 30 mins for 24 hours… …Should the weekend turn out to be sunny, as expected, [Rebecca] thinks the biggest challenge will be “finding a beach with wifi.” (Hint, the FatPort guys blast Wifi at the grassy areas of Kits Beach along Cornwall) [Cyberbuzz.tv] This article is in today’s 24 Hours free daily newspaper this morning on page 11, just past the dude with the beard of bees. I have also contacted the Surrey Food Bank to let them know...
